As a synthetic pyrethroid, permethrin is classified as a possible human carcinogen (US EPA Group C) and is acutely toxic to aquatic organisms — particularly fish and aquatic invertebrates — at nanogram-per-litre concentrations. In textile finishing effluents, permethrin residues have been detected at levels exceeding safe aquatic thresholds in multiple European wastewater surveys. This is not a theoretical risk. It is a documented regulatory liability.
For premium wool products, the challenge is more immediate. Permethrin residues persist on finished fabric and raise concerns for direct skin contact — particularly for sensitive consumers including children and pregnant women. Several major European retailers have responded by tightening their Restricted Substances Lists (RSLs), with some moving to voluntarily eliminate permethrin from wool finishing specifications entirely.
Regulatory pressure is building in parallel. The European Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR) review of permethrin for textile treatment applications is under ongoing scrutiny. REACH SVHC discussions continue to cast a shadow over its long-term status. And the ZDHC Manufacturing Restricted Substances List (MRSL) has driven industry-wide attention to pyrethroid residues in textile wastewater.
The direction of travel is clear. A credible, durable, consumer-safe alternative to permethrin-based moth proofing is no longer a niche interest — it is becoming an industry requirement.
