The Science of Staying Power: Microencapsulation Explained

If you ask why most natural moth repellents fail in commercial textile applications, the answer almost always comes down to one word: durability.
Essential oils from neem, cedarwood, lavender, and tobacco leaf have well-established repellent and insecticidal properties against clothes moths and their larvae. They are biodegradable, derived from renewable agricultural sources, and increasingly preferred by brands with genuine sustainability commitments. So why are they not already the commercial standard in wool moth-proofing?

Because without the right delivery system, natural actives evaporate, wash out, and degrade rapidly. A lavender-treated wool garment may smell pleasantly repellent for a week. After a standard commercial wash cycle, the protection is essentially gone.

Microencapsulation changes that equation entirely.

At Innoleague Technologies India Pvt Ltd, we encapsulate our moth-control actives within an aminoplast polymer shell a hard, thermoset matrix formed from acrylic acid copolymers crosslinked with melamine-formaldehyde precondensates. This shell performs three critical functions simultaneously: it protects the active from premature evaporation during product storage and handling; it anchors the capsule to the wool substrate through controlled textile application; and it releases the active gradually over time, through slow permeation through the shell wall and physical rupture under use conditions friction, pressure, movement.

Our capsule architecture is built on over a decade of microencapsulation development at Innoleague, anchored in our patented aminoplast platform (Indian Patent Application No. 1390/MUM/2015). Capsule size, shell thickness, core-to-shell ratio, and surface chemistry are engineered specifically for the demands of wool moth control not repurposed from fragrance or personal care applications.

The result is a suspension that can be applied to wool by standard padding methods, delivers measurable moth mortality across multiple wash cycles, and leaves no synthetic pesticide residue on the finished textile.
Next week: the natural actives that make it work.
